All eyes are on Netflix today after hackers leaked the season 5 premiere of Orange Is The New Black, months ahead of it’s June 9th 2017 release date.
A hacking group that goes by the name
of TheDarkOverlord released S05E01 of Orange Is The New Black today, and is demanding that Netflix pay an unspecified ransom to prevent all the new episodes from leaking online.
When communicating about the incident with TorrentFreak, TheDarkOverlord claimed that sometime close to the end of 2016 they gained access to the systems of Larson Studios.
Larson studios is a post production dialogue recording studio based in Hollywood. From here they were able to get their hands on a trove of Netflix content, as well as access a number of other studios and unreleased material.
Rumours have been circulating online for months that a massive leak of Hollywood films and TV episodes would be leaked online if demands were not met. Included with the rumours were screenshots of footage, and a deal to delete the stolen content in return for thousands of dollars.
After negotiations failed between Larson Studios and TheDarkOverlord, the group decided to go public, target Netflix, and make good on their promise by uploading Orange Is The New Black S05E01 to The Pirate Bay.
TDO claims to be sitting on a pile of unreleased, high quality content. If what they say is true, and demands are not met, we may see one of the largest piracy leaks of recent times.
EverydayElectronics is keeping a close eye on the situation and will release updates as they come in.
